Nazareth and Cana of Galilee
Nazareth
Nazareth is a Lower Galilee city which is one of the most important
Christian holy places in the world. The centre of Christian pilgrimage,
the impressive Basilica of the Annunciation, was built in 1960's in the
Old City of Nazareth (the historical part of today's relatively small,
mostly Arab city). The design of this large church, the most recent in a
row of churches erected over the Grotto of the Annunciation since the
4th century A.D., is very remarkable. The basilica incorporates remains
of a church built by Crusaders.
Basilica of the Annunciation is also noted for a collection of large
icons (images of Mary). The images, many of them mosaic, come from many
regions and cultures in all parts of the world. Some of them are copies
of images honoured by Catholics in their countries. This interesting
collection is located on the upper floor of the Basilica and in the
courtyard.
A few more important churches are located inside and outside the Old
City of Nazareth, some contain remains from the time of Jesus. The city
spreads over the beautiful hills of Galilee, is near a modern town of
Upper Nazareth and not far from the Lake
Kinneret.
Cana of Galilee
A small Arab town of Kafr Cana, north of Nazareth,
is considered to be the site of the First
Miracle, where Jesus changed water to wine.
The churches of Cana are on the pedestrian 'Churches Street',
which begins and ends on the main
highway going through Cana.
