Hiking in the Golan

,2 - 'Hexagon pools' in Upper Zavitan stream (47 Kb) 1,2 - 'Hexagon pools' in Upper Zavitan stream (47 Kb) Hiking trails in the Golan Heights are among the most interesting in Israel. Many trails follow the beautiful streams which flow in the Golan, and you have the opportunity to hike in the canyon cut by such a stream. Five streams flow through the Yehudia reserve; the Yehudia stream hike is very exciting, partly because the hikers have to swim across a few small but very deep pools at the bottom of the waterfalls.

- The Round Pool and a waterfall in Lower Zavitan stream (29 Kb) The Zavitan hike is very spectacular too, but swimming there is not mandatory. However, it offers many pools to swim in, filled with refreshing cold clear water. A unique natural formation can be seen along the upper part of the Zavitan stream: the banks of the pools consist of hexagonal and pentagonal basalt prisms. We do not know of a satisfactory explanation of the phenomenon, but it is well worth hiking. The name "Zavitan" itself comes from a Hebrew word for "angle".

- The Black Waterfall on El Al stream (26 Kb) 5 - El Al: the jungle near the streambed (24 Kb) Another popular hiking destination is El Al stream with its White and Black waterfalls, in the southern part of the Golan.
- Wild grapes ripen in El Al canyon in September (20 Kb) 7 - El Al hike, southern Golan heights (29 Kb)
